TIMEX Computer 2048

The Timex Computer 2048 (TC2048) is a modified TC2068 to be a Sinclair ZX Spectrum clone, designed by Timex of Portugal, to be more affordable than the TC2068 and more reliable than the ZX Spectrum since it uses fewer ICs.

The AY-3-8912 sound generator and the command cartridges dock port were removed, the 2 joysticks ports were replaced by 1 Kempson joystick port, the edge connector have the same number of contacts as the ZX Spectrum keeping its signal layout and the 2068 ROMs were replaced with a ZX Spectrum ROM with a little modification so the computer can boot on the correct screen mode.

Because TC2048 uses the same 68-pin custom gate array that TC2068 uses, it also has the special display modes of TC2068. Timex of Portugal released a BASIC extension called BASIC 64 that allows using PRINT, CIRCLE, and DRAW in 64 column/512×192 screen resolution.

Timex of Portugal exported the TC2048 to Poland and even modified the video signal to the NTSC TV system for South and North America markets.

This machine is not related to the fated Timex Sinclair 2048 which would be a 16K version of the TS2068 in the USA.
