Thandar Electronics

Thandar Electronics (1980-89); formerly Sinclair Electronics (1979-80)

Founded in 1961 by Sir Clive Sinclair, Sinclair Radionics became known for innovative consumer and scientific electronics. By the late 1970s, overseas competition and ambitious projects strained its finances. Seen as a valuable British manufacturer, it received public investment from the National Enterprise Board (NEB), which soon took majority control. The NEB sold off the calculator and television divisions, retaining the more profitable scientific instrument business.

In 1979, with his vision diverging from the NEB’s, Sinclair stepped down and turned his attention to new projects. What remained was briefly renamed Sinclair Electronics before becoming Thandar Electronics in 1980, continuing production at the former St Ives premises.

In 1989 Thandar merged with Thurlby Electronics to form Thurlby Thandar Instruments (TTi), still operating today, now as AIM-TTi.
