COMMODORE VIC-20

Developed in 1980, to be the successor of the Commodore Pet, the VIC-20 was the first microcomputer to sell over 1 million units and was a great success for Jack Tramiel’s brand.

Released the same year the Sinclair ZX80 was, the Commodore VIC-20 was a more complete microcomputer. However, it was three times the price of Sinclair’s micro, so it was less accessible to amateur electronic lovers that were taking their first steps into the new micro informatic world.

VIC-20’s marketing campaign was very aggressive and in-your-face, with adverts starring actor William Shatner, from the renowned Star Trek series. This exponentially grow the sales for this machine.
